The field of periodontal medicine is undergoing a profound conceptual and therapeutic transformation. Traditional linear models largely predicated on the assumption that bacterial load alone drives disease have proven insufficient to explain the persistence, recurrence, and systemic associations of periodontitis. Within the Epoch #4 framework, periodontal disease is increasingly understood as an emergent property of a complex adaptive system, governed by non-linear immune signaling, metabolic feedback loops, and potentially quantum-enabled microbial processes.
